In grades eight through 10, Shuo had been on the varsity basketball team.
He'd lived in Montreal until he was five, then moved back to England, where his parents had separated. He'd lived in their apartment with his mother, in Chiswick.
"In my first year of university I felt like I was missing a lot of opportunities," he says. "I didn't have a sense of belonging. I felt like I wasn't doing very well."
His grades were good enough to get him into one of Canada's top business schools, the University of British Columbia, where he started a degree in management and marketing.
"I decided to take a year off because I didn't feel I was doing well enough in my first semester," he says. "I took a course in cognitive neuroscience and decided that I wanted to go into a PhD program."
